Cool first, pack second

Warm cookies release moisture into a closed box. Wait until the centers are fully cool and coatings have set before packing. Arrange a trial layer before committing to a container: a little extra space is useful, but a cavernous box lets cookies slide and break.

Separate texture and aroma

Soft pumpkin cookies can transfer moisture to crisp shortbread. Pack them in separate food-safe bags or compartments, ideally in separate airtight containers inside the gift box. Peppermint can perfume an entire assortment; give it its own sealed wrapping rather than placing it directly against buttery or citrus cookies.

Protect the decorations

Use parchment between sturdy layers, and keep delicate iced shapes in a single layer when practical. Food-safe paper cups can cradle individual cookies. Decorative tissue, colored paper, and craft materials should not touch food unless explicitly intended for food contact. Choose a rigid outer container for transport.

Include useful information

Label the cookie names, ingredients and relevant allergens, date baked, and storage instructions from each recipe. Do not describe a box as allergen-free if shared equipment or ingredient sourcing cannot support that claim. For mailing, choose sturdy, nonperishable cookies and consider travel time and weather; refrigeration-dependent fillings are not suitable for an ordinary parcel.
